Parents are being urged to be vigilant after it emerged that a child has died in Ireland after contracting Strep A.

A Cork pharmacist says it's vital that parents make themselves aware of the signs of Strep A as prompt action will result in early medical intervention.

Symptoms include a high fever, severe muscle aches, nausea and vomiting along with stomach pain

Speaking to RedFM News Nigel Maloney from CarePlus Pharmacy in Carrigaline is advising parents to act quickly as antibiotics will reduce the risk of further complications.

"The key to treatment of Strep infection, because it is a  bacterial infection is treatment with an antibiotic.

"It's usually penicillin, unless the child is allergic to penicillin, in which case alternatives are available.

"Usually a quick and prompt treatment with an antibiotic will treat the infection."
