Five-time All-Ireland winner DJ Carey has pleaded guilty to ten charges of deception.

The former Kilkenny hurler admitted defrauding a number of people by falsely claiming he needed money for cancer treatment.

DJ, or Denis Carey as he was named in court, was due to stand trial today on 21 fraud and forgery charges.

He was accused of falsely claiming he had cancer to solicit money from a number of individuals between 2014 and 2022.

However, when his case was called, the 54-year-old pleaded guilty to ten of the charges.

One of the remaining counts was struck out, while the others will be taken into consideration when it comes to sentencing.

In terms of his health, the court was told he is receiving ongoing treatment for a heart condition that required surgery last year.

Mental health issues were also brought to the judge’s attention.

His sentence hearing is due to take place on the 29th of October, when the particulars of the crimes he has admitted to will be laid bare in court.

The victims of his fraud will also be given an opportunity to address the court on that date.
