Amnesty International has hit out at Governments across the globe for introducing legislation imposing restrictions on the right to protest.
The organisation says the right to protest is under unprecedented and growing threat across all regions.
The comments come as Amnesty launched a new global campaign to confront states’ who it says are widening and intensifying efforts to erode a fundamental human right.
Acting Director of Human Rights at Amnesty International Ireland Fiona Crowley says Ireland also has questions to answer.
"We're seeing this right across the world, where there's not just increasing use of legal measures to restrict protest, but also the expansion of unlawful mass and targeted surveillance.
"We'd be concerned for instance around the Gardai's use of facial recognition technology, so we'd be arguing against that for sure.
