The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission this week received 83 complaints in relation to fuel prices.

The Dail has also heard claims retailers had increased prices, ahead of an emergency vote on Wednesday night to cut to excise on petrol and diesel - something they've denied.

Prices are still in the region of 2-euro a litre despite the new tax cuts.

Kevin McPartlan, CEO of Fuels for Ireland, says price reductions aren't as straightforward as the government led people to believe

"That's the problem that we've had this week we've had ministers, talking about, for example, an excise duty cut of 15 and 20 cent on petrol and diesel, which was inaccurate because the actual excise cut was 12.2 cent on diesel, and it was about 60 cent on petrol, and that was because they were also factoring in the VAT  that they're going to charge on the tax anyway. So, we have to actually start having informed debate"
