Wife of man who died in 2019 plane crash welcomes US ruling that has categorised those killed as "crime victims"

Naoise Ryan's husband Mike Ryan was one of 346 people who died when two Boeing 737 Max plans crashed in separate incidents in 2018 and 2019.

Originally from Clare, Mike Ryan lived in the city with his family and worked with the UN's World Food Programme as a deputy chief engineer.

He was working in Ethiopia when the 737 Max plane he was traveling on crashed 6 minutes after taking off from Addis Ababa, resulting in the deaths of 157 people.

Five months before the crash, a Lion Air 737 Max crashed in Indonesia, resulting in the deaths of 189 people.

The Irish Examiner reports that Naoise Ryan has welcomed a test ruling in the US which found the crashes were the direct result of criminal behaviour on the part of Boeing.

The judge also ruled that the US Justice Department had violated the rights of the people killed in the disasters when it fined Boeing $2.5 billion in a deal that meant the aircraft manufacturer would avoid prosecution.

The paper also reports that Naoise Ryan said that families waiting for guidance on the full implications of the court ruling.
