The community of the North Cork town of Buttevant have been rallying around Ukrainian refugees who arrived there last night.

40 woman and young children arrived at the old convent on the main street of Buttevant at around 2:30am.

Around 60 more people are expected to arrive from Ukraine tonight.

The convent building will serve as a rest centre to temporarily house the refugees, who are said to be in good spirits.

The community was notified of their arrival at six o'clock last evening.

However, the convent has not been lived in for several years - so a large team of volunteers worked late into the night to prepare, including 19 from Cork North Civil Defence.

Speaking to RedFM News, one of the volunteers from the Buttevant community, Terri O'Gorman said that the community response has been amazing but the work is not finished:

"You know some people just came with their bags on their back. There's small children and they might have only had the clothes that they were standing up in. We thought we would have enough but with 60 more people coming in tonight, we'll take any duvets, pillows, clothes etc. We have an overflow-hall open on the Main Street. We're not bringing stuff into the convent at the moment and they'll take the stuff and sort it there and pass it down as it's needed. If they're willing to have a spare pair of hands, you know, and if they want to come to the convent, I'm sure there will always be a job found for them to do: just organising stuff and helping out with the stuff when it comes in and cleaning and there'll be 60 beds to make up tonight. It's just been amazing."
