Temperatures are set to hit 30 degrees or possibly higher in some parts again today as the latest summer heatwave continues.

A status yellow alert for high temperatures comes into effect for the entire country at midday today and runs until Sunday morning.

Irish Water is not anticipating introducing a hose-pipe ban in the short to medium term despite what it has described as the challenging conditions due to the prolonged dry spell.

It says the vast majority of its 750 treatment plants continue to meet the demand for water supply.

There are currently 24 supplies impacted by shortages, the utility company has implemented a range of measures including tankering and night-time restrictions to protect supplies.

The National Parents' Council for primary school children has called for the voluntary contributions process to be scrapped.

Voluntary contributions are made by parents to cover annual heating, electricity and maintenance costs in primary schools.

The contributions can range from 200 to 400 Euro per household depending on the size of the school.

The much anticipated Ironman triathlon event gets under way in Youghal today with a children's race.

Around 2,400 athletes will take part in the half triathlon tomorrow, with the main event getting underway on Sunday.

Large parts of the town are pedestrianised until Monday and people are being encouraged to use a park and ride service
