Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is being urged not to rush through legislation allowing body-cams to be worn by Gardaí.
The Irish Council for Civil Liberties says a new bill that includes automatic car plate recognition and the use of CCTV in public spaces, needs careful scrutiny.
Executive Director Liam Herrick says the process could otherwise end up being unconstitutional:
"The Garda Digital Recordings Bill, which addresses a very wide range of issues around surveillance, including the use of CCTV by guards and in court cases; and we're also told that the government intends to introduce new and controversial measures with regard to facial recognition technology. So it's a very complex piece of legislation, which has gone through pre-legislative scrutiny but has not been debated by the Dáil or the Seanad and hasn't gone to Committee Stage yet".
