A survivor of child sexual abuse has been awarded €350,000 in damages against her father and uncle.
It follows the settlement of a legal action against the HSE in a case where she accused them of allowing her to remain in a high-risk situation.
"The woman, who’s now in her 30s and is entitled to anonymity, was sexually abused by her father for at least eight years, if not more, from when she was 7yo.
Her uncle began abusing her when she was 13yo.
Both received prison sentences for what they did.
This civil legal action began ten years ago when she decided to sue them for the psychological trauma caused by their abuse.
As a child, she developed eating disorders and made several suicide attempts. Mr Justice Garrett Simons also heard she still suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.
She also sued the HSE for failing to take adequate steps to keep her safe after the abuse came to light. That was settled last year for €130,000 and in awarding her €350,000 in damages today, Mr Justice Simons set another date to hear submissions on whether that sum should be reduced as a result of the HSE settlement".
