Over 700 thousand voters aged up to 29 are being urged to register to vote.

Those who have turned 18 and have become eligible to vote are also encouraged to register by close of business today.

The National Youth Council wants them to go to checktheregister.ie, ahead of the local and European elections.

Its Policy Manager Grace McManus says it's vital they use their vote:

"We're very privileged so we get to work with lots of organisations that work with young people and young people are engaged and they're passionate and they have something to say. And it's important that they, their voice is heard by the people who will represent them for the next five years. So we want to encourage them to make sure that they have used their rights and vote in the upcoming elections".
