Social Media companies may have to label certain posts surrounding elections and referenda

Social media companies may have to label posts about elections and referenda that are amplified by bots.

The Electoral Reform Bill proposes new powers to prevent manipulative or inauthentic behaviours online.

Take down and correction notices could also be issued to protect Ireland's democratic processes.

Junior Minister for Electorial Reform, Malcolm Noonan, says strengthening the Electoral Commission would protect voting integrity:

"Platforms would be required to report possible disinformation, misinformation or say manipulative or inauthentic behavior in the online sphere to the commission in the lead up to an  electoral event or a referendum period. I think it's it's an important element that would add an added level of robustness and we look at what's happening in other jurisdictions that in Ireland, we were fortunate in the sense that we have a very good electoral system."
