A man who shot dead a young father while he was out for a walk with his baby son has been handed a life sentence for his murder.
Wayne Cooney, a convicted drug dealer from Glenshane Drive in Tallaght, Dublin, shot Jordan Davis in a laneway between a school and a church in Darndale in 2019.
A judge has described the murder of a young man who owed 70,000 euro to a drug dealer as a 'sad lesson' in the dangers of becoming deeply involved in drug crime.
He was speaking at the sentence hearing of Wayne Cooney, from Glenshane Drive in Tallaght in Dublin, who was convicted earlier this week of murdering Jordan Davis in 2019.
In broad daylight on the 22nd of May 2019, Wayne Cooney cycled up to Jordan Davis as he was out for a walk with his 4mth old baby boy.
Cooney caught up with him in a laneway between the local school and church in Darndale and fired eight shots – three of them hit the 22yo and proved fatal.
At the sentence hearing today, Jordan’s mother, Sandra, spoke about how her grandson was robbed of a great Dad and outside court afterwards, she said they’d keep his memory alive:
Jordan owed a drug dealer €70k and Gardaí found drugs on him after the shooting but despite his suspected involvement in criminal activity, Mr Justice Tony Hunt said he had a right to life and should have been dealt with by the proper authorities and not barbarians running around with guns.
Cooney was then handed the mandatory life sentence for murder.
It’s believed Mr Davis was killed over a 70,000 euro drug debt.
