An infectious disease consultant says there's 'a little chance' of human-to-human transmission of bird flu.

However Eoghan de Barra says the majority of people who've contracted avian flu, work closely with poultry.

Restriction zones were introduced following an outbreak of bird flu within a turkey flock in County Monaghan.

Eoghan de Barra Consultant at Beaumont Hospital says it can be a serious infection for people.

"At the moment it sits with the commercial in supply chain and the humane issue around culling,  I think it's over 55 million birds in Europe this year. So far.

"There's little chance at the moment of human disease. There have been a few cases and those present a fairly severe disease in humans.

"Most of them have been people to work closely with the birds, but there hasn't been so far which will be called human to human transmission."

Irish Farmers' Association President Tim Cullinan is hopeful it won't spread beyond the farm at the centre of the outbreak.

"We've had bird flu in the past and it was restricted to small numbers of birds, and hopefully, that is the situation.

"I know we have one farm at the moment and hopefully it will remain as one farm.

"By people cooperating, working with each other working within the industry and working with the department, everything will be done to contain this."
