Sinn Féin is warning the Government that it is driving the homeless crisis to a level nobody ever thought was possible.

It came during the Dáil debate on a Sinn Fein motion which seeks to extend the eviction ban, which will be voted on this afternoon.

The Government is on course to win the vote after the regional group of Independent TD's agreed to support it.

However Sinn Fein's Housing spokesperson, Éoin O' Broin, described it as the worst decision of all.

And he warned Minister Darragh O' Brien will be remembered like some of his political predecessors.

"For those of us old enough to remember when Margaret Thatcher withdrew free milk from schools in Britain, 'Thatcher Thatcher the milk snatcher' was the campaign slogan.

"John Bruton and the VAT on children's shoes almost brought down the Government.

"That is your legacy - that is what people will associate with the name Darragh O'Brien. The Minister who deliberately increased homelessness."

The Taoiseach is standing by the governments decision not to extend the eviction ban.

Leo Varadkar says extending it would just push the problem further down the line.

"We always understood that when we put in place a temporary eviction ban that when you remove it you see that there is an effect when you cease it.

"We were aware of it, going into it with our eyes open. I see suggestions from the opposition to extend it to January, or to extend it for four months in certain circumstances, the same problem would still arise and that's jus the truth of it."
