Fewer parents in Ireland are choosing to enrol their kids in school at the age of four.

According to the Department of Education only 17% of junior infants last January were four years old.

That's compared to 47% twenty years ago.

The number of students repeating a year of primary school has also fallen, from 5,500 in 2001 to just under 2,000 last year.
