Abolition of inpatient charges for children sees progress

The abolition of inpatient charges for children has moved a step closer.

President Michael D Higgins has signed the bill which also provides provides for free contraception for women aged 17 to 25.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly says once commenced, it will lead to the scrapping of overnight and day case public inpatient charges for children under 16 in public hospitals.

The measures are scheduled to come into operation in early September.
