The Foreign Affairs Minister says an attack on a senior Irish diplomat in Sudan is "deeply concerning".
The EU's Ambassador to Sudan Aidan O'Hara was last night assaulted in his home in Khartoum by a group of men.
He wasn't seriously injured, but Tánaiste Micheál Martin says the attack is a gross violation of the Vienna Convention, which contains obligations to protect diplomats.
Naomi O'Leary, Europe Correspondent with the Irish Times, says over 185 people have been killed in Sudan in recent days.
"Two factions of the army have turned on each other, after helping each other to overthrow the previous leader.
"The usually peaceful city of Khartoum has descended into really bad violence, with airstrikes and artillery fire raining down, water and power cut in the capital.
"Civilians are really feeling the brunt of it with the hospitals shut, and at least 185 people killed according to the United Nations."
Deeply concerned at serious incident at home of the EU Ambassador to Sudan. A gross violation of the Vienna Convention.
Thoughts are with outstanding Irish diplomat serving EU in difficult circumstances, and his family. Call for urgent cessation of violence in Sudan & dialogue.— Micheál Martin (@MichealMartinTD) April 17, 2023
