Almost 100 million euro was stolen from Irish people through frauds and scams last year.

Data from FraudSmart for 2023 shows card scams accounted for 95 per cent of fraudulent transactions.

Electronic money transfers, however, came with a higher cost, and accounted for more than 33 million euro worth of overall losses,

Conor Pope, Consumer Affairs Correspondent with The Irish Times, says the situation may be worse than reported:

"It's probably a combination of the fact that there is more criminal activity and the criminal activity is getting more sinister. So what we have seen was a 16% jump in the amount of money that Irish consumers lost to fraudsters. That's just the money that the Irish banks know above. There is probably more money that has been lost, but they might be too embarrassed to come forward".
