Jamie Spears, the father of Britney, has filed a petition to end the conservatorship that has been imposed on his daughter since 2008.

Jamie is the conservator of Britney's estate meaning he has control over her finances, career and other aspects of her life for the past 13 years. The conservatorship was initially meant to be temporary after Britney suffered a breakdown and needed assistance in managing her affairs.

Britney's conservatorship has been in the limelight in recent months after the 39 year old appeared in court to request that her father be removed from the role because of his abuse of the legal agreement. The popstar has not performed on stage since 2018 and is refusing to do so while her father still has control on her life.

The filing by Jamie Spears says, "Recent events related to this conservatorship have called into question whether circumstances have changed to such an extent that grounds for establishment of a conservatorship may no longer exist.

"Ms. Spears has told this Court that she wants control of her life back without the safety rails of a conservatorship. She wants to be able to make decisions regarding her own medical care, deciding when, where and how often to get therapy. She wants to control the money she has made from her career and spend it without supervision or oversight. She wants to be able to get married and have a baby, if she so chooses. In short, she wants to live her life as she chooses without the constraints of a conservator or court proceeding.

"As Mr. Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter. If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance."

Britney's lawyers have also made a statement to CNN following the filing, stating, "This filing represents another legal victory for Britney Spears -- a massive one -- as well as vindication for Ms. Spears.

"It appears that Mr. Spears believes he can try to avoid accountability and justice, including sitting for a sworn deposition and answering other discovery under oath."

Britney is in a relationship with 27-year-old fitness expert and actor Sam Asghari and has previously indicated she wants to marry him and have children. Spears already shares two kids with her ex-husband Kevin Federline, Sean who is 15 and Jayden who is 14.

In her recent appearances in court, Britney outlined the negative impact the conservatorship had on her life, labelling it "cruelty".
