The former head of the HSE has described the report conducted by Dr Gabrial Scally on Cervical Check , as an 'important piece of work.'
Dr. Gabriel Scally reviewed his 2018 report into Cervical Check and the controversy which saw over 200 women not informed of abnormalities found in their smear test results during a ‘look-back’ audit.
The final Scally review of the implementation of his inquiry recommendations found that substantial progress has been made on the 50 recommendations.
Dr Tony O' Brien resigned as Director General of the HSE in 2018 over the controversy surrounding the cancer screening programme.
He says while he hasn't read the whole report, those currently running the programme are addressing the problems of the past:
"I think it's fair to say that Dr Skally has done an important piece of work. It's good that he's reached the stage that he's at. And while obviously there have been problems in the past, what's very clear from his report is that the Cervical Check Programme is highly effective and he's recommended that people continue to avail of it".
