An intensive care consultant says teenagers are in ICU departments with Covid-19.

The age of patients with Covid in intensive care ranges from 17 to 88 years old.

402 people are currently in hospital with the virus, 73 of whom are in intensive care.

The Department of Health says 70% of Covid patients in ICU have not been fully vaccinated.

Dr Catherine Motherway, Intensive Care consultant at University Hospital Limerick says they're treating a lot of young people.

"The age groups that are being seen and have been admitted in the latest surge have ranged from 17 to 88 into our ICUs.

"So we're seeing people in their late teens really sick in ICUs around this country.

"We know that half of the patients in the current surge that come into the ICU are under 54 - and I would consider under 54 very young."
