A Cork TD wants people living in international protection who are working, to contribute towards their accommodation.

It follows comments by Tánaiste Simon Harris who said that 'a contribution model is important for social cohesion'.

The Government axed plans to turn part of a building on South Terrace into a 50-person accommodation centre last week.

Independent TD Ken O’Flynn says many people in IPAS centres are in a position to pay towards their stay:

"There are asylum seekers living in hotels getting three meals a day and getting toiletries and sundries. There are Irish people down in Cork Simon and various other charities who are waiting to get in and lucky to get a mattress and thrown out at 7 in the morning. The reality is is that we have a situation here where we are asking people who can contribute, who are working, to contribute."
