The Public Expenditure Minister says the government are closely monitoring the number of Covid ICU admissions, ahead of a meeting of the Covid Sub-Committee on Monday.

Michael McGrath says the committee will make recommendations to the government on Tuesday after NPHET wrote to Health Minister Stephen Donnelly yesterday evening.

NPHET have recommended that people work from home as much as possible amid a surge in cases of Covid- around one in every two hundred people in Ireland tested positive for the virus last week.

Speaking to RedFM News on a visit to Kanturk this morning, Minister Michael McGrath says the government are concerned about the recent spike in cases:

"We are watching the situation in our hospitals, and in particular in ICU, very closely. We know that the vast majority of employers and employees are making common sense decisions in relation to whether or not to go to the normal place of work. And I think it's important that we have a single coherent and clear message for both employers and employees. So the government has listened to now to NPHET's advice. We will considered collectively on Monday and on Tuesday, and there will be a public statement from government on Tuesday."
