A new apprenticeship degree in bar management is like a passport that you can use anywhere.

That's according to the Vintners' Federation of Ireland who have joined forces with Griffith College and Solas to create a work based learning programme where students will be sponsored by their employer to work four days a week and spend once day a week in lectures for the duration of the three year course.

The VFI say that pubs are struggling to retain staff since Covid-19 with some bars only open 4 days a week due to staffing shortages.

Speaking to RedFM News, Chair of the VFI Bar Manager Apprenticeship Degree Committee, Pat Crotty, says this BA in Bar Management could take people anywhere.

"It's our own initiative in the VFI to fill the gap in the market place, there's lots of other degrees and qualifications available already the bar have never had one so I would imagine over time this will open up that we will take all comers.

"The degree is recognised worldwide. It's accredited by the HEA and sponsored by Solas, which are the training agencies for Ireland, and it's portable. You can bring it like a passport anywhere and it will give confidence to any employer anywhere in the world that you have the skills you say you have."
