The Echo reports the NTA are currently exploring options for the 17-kilometre line that will run from West of the City in Ballincollig to Mahon in the East.

UCC, MTU, CUH, the city centre and Kent Station will also be served by the proposed light rail, which is part of the Cork Metropolitan Transport Strategy.

A €600 million investment in the BusConnects element of the strategy was announced earlier this week and it’s expected the Luas line would intersect with several points along the 12 new bus corridors.

Speaking to RedFM News, CEO of the NTA Anne Graham says projects like the BusConnects and Luas line are needed to facilitate the projected growth in population in the city:

"The population is set to grow by 50 to 60%. It's a very ambitious plan set out in the programme for government for Cork. And we want to ensure that the sustainable transport solutions are there to meet that growth and to encourage people to use sustainable transport as part of their journeys."
