People are sleeping at their workplaces - due to the lack of affordable accommodation in Cork.

That’s according to Caitriona Twomey from Cork Penny Dinners who was speaking ahead of a cost of living protest in the city today, which gets underway at 2.

On Wednesday, members of the Cost of Living Campaign staged a sit-in protest at the offices of Bord Gáis Energy in the Airport Business Park to publicise today's protest.

The group say it’s unacceptable that Bord Gáis is recording huge profits - after hiking their prices five times in the past year.

At the Campaign's last rally in September, over 7,500 demonstrators attended.

At a press conference on Monday, Caitriona Twomey told RedFM News that some people are being hit very hard by the cost of living:

"We know some people, and their employers are letting them sleep on their premises, because they can't find a place to live in. And they're staying there when everybody goes home. They're in there. You know, we heard the shops can't turn on the heating. Years ago, people would just walk around the city, and if they couldn't afford to heat their house, they could get go into places, and spend the time inside. A a lot of the shops you go into now, haven't been eating and because they just can't afford it. And they obviously will be the smaller shops".
