The City Council is reassuring the public that its road crews are working 24/7 to salt and grit main roads, transport corridors and footpaths - to tackle the current cold snap.

The National Emergency Coordination Group is meeting this morning to discuss mitigation measures nationwide.

All government departments will attend along with the Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien, Met Éireann, Transport operators and councils.

A status yellow Low Temperature/Ice warning and Freezing Fog warning for the country will stay in place until midday today, while an orange warning will kick in at 5 o'clock this evening.

Cathal Nolan of Ireland's Weather Channel says the big freeze will continue this morning:

"I suppose many of us are waking up this morning to what is an has been a bitterly cold night. We've seen temperatures dip as low as -5, -6 degrees in some parts. With that, of course, we do have that status orange weather warning in place for particularly cold temperatures. Certainly, that will continue on through the course of the coming day. We don't expect to see temperatures reach above freezing in many parts of the country, especially so for inland areas - that little bit warmer in coastal areas".
