The 67th Cork International Film Festival opened last night at Cork Opera House.

Following being opened by Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Derry Canty, the opening night showed a packed house a screening of Aisha, directed by Frank Berry. CIFF’s Patron, Lord David Puttnam also provided warm words of welcome in a recorded message broadcast before the Irish premiere screening.

A variety of short films, documentaries and features will be displayed and screened at venues across Cork city over the next 10 days.

Highlights this weekend include Cine Concert in the Triskel on Saturday, which will see the return of Cork composers Irene and Linda Buckley with a newly commissioned seminal 1902 film A Trip to the Moon, funded by the Arts Council Commissions Award. This was composed in collaboration with music students from Coláiste Choilm in Ballincollig.

Other highlights include a 50th anniversary screening of Perry Henzell's 'The Harder They Come', a 'Culinary Cinema' for wine lovers at Terroir to Table, and Adrian Sibley's 'The Ghost of Richard Harris'.

Speaking about the 67th edition of CIFF, Festival Director and CEO, Fiona Clarke said:

"Our aim is to bring the best cinema from around the world to Cork each year, giving audiences the opportunity to see these fantastic films first and on the big screen. It is a privilege to open our 67th edition with such a powerful, beautifully drawn and relevant story in Frank Berry's Aisha, and we can't wait for audiences to immerse themselves in the rest of our exciting programme over the next 10 days."
