25 national bravery awards have been handed down to 17 people who risked their own lives to help someone in danger

The Bravery awards were set up in 1947 to recognise those who risked their lives to save others and are administered by - the Deeds of Bravery Council - which is chaired by the Ceann Comhairle.

Three people from Cork - Shane Maloney, Beth Darrer and Niamh McMahon were presented with awards today

Lana O'Connor has more for RedFM News:

"Three years ago Shane Maloney was working with his father in Doneraile moving a boat in their back garden when the mast came into contact with an overhead power line

His father was pulled towards the power line by the force of the power going through the mast and without a thought Shane pulled his father away from the boat. His Dad went into Cardiac Arrest and Shane and his mother commenced CPR on him which ultimately saved his life.

For his actions, Shane Moloney was awarded a Certificate of Bravery.

In May last year four young men got into difficulty while in the water at Inchydoney Beach . Beth Darrer heard shouts for help, and raised the alarm before grabbing a lifebuoy and wading into the water to help. She was joined by Niamh McMahon who managed to get one of the men up onto her surfboard and she had another clinging to the board. They managed to get to all the men and brought all of them back to the shore safely.

For their actions Beth Darrer and Niamh McMahon are each awarded a Bronze Medal and a Certificate of Bravery.

The crew of a Waterford based Irish Coast guard helicopter Rescue 117 - Sarah Courtney, Ronan Flanagan, Adrian O'Hara, and Aaron Hyland were also honoured today for their bravey in successfully evacuating a crew of seven from a vessel which was in grave danger of sinking in force 9 gales and 12 meters seas off Bantry Bay at the end of March
