Squid Game has officially become Netflix's biggest hit.

The streaming service has announced that a "mind-boggling" 142 million households have now watched the Korean show.

If you're not in one of those 142 million households, or have been living under a rock the past few weeks, Squid Game is a dystopian drama set in Korea where people who are desperate for money are invited to take part in a mystery game in order to win a sum of money.

Written by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game has overtaken Bridgerton with it's 82 million households as the most successful launch of a TV series on the streaming platform.

Squid Game has become a cultural phenomenon with 42 billion views on TikTok of videos related to the show as well as a Saturday Night Live skit with consumer products based on the show heading for retail outlets as demand is high.

Since Squid Game has appeared on Netflix, the company has gained about 4.4 million new customers in the last quarter, meaning 214 million total customers worldwide.
