CORK CITY FC WOMEN’S TEAM PREPARE TO TAKE ON LEAGUE LEADERS

It comes as four players are earmarked for International duty

Cork City FC is calling on football fans to show their support for the senior women’s team ahead of two highly anticipated games over the next two weekends.  In this Saturday’s Women’s Premier Division Cork City FC take on Shamrock Rovers in Turner’s Cross and they’re facing Peamount United in an away game on Saturday, September 9th.

The call comes as a number of the Cork City FC women’s senior team have been called up for International duty with the Republic of Ireland. Clodagh Fitzgerald and Kiera Sena, both 15-years old, are currently in Portugal with the Ireland u17 team while four players are being looked at for the Ireland u19 team and they are Niamh Cotter, Ellie O’Brien, Heidi O’Sullivan and Heidi Macken.

Clodagh Fitzgerald and Kiera Sena came through the Cork City Academy and have proven to be valuable players on the pitch.  Clodagh is the youngest starting player for the Cork City FC senior women’s team while Kiera is the youngest goalscorer.

Danny Murphy, Head of Women’s Football, said; “Getting the calls from the Ireland squad is a real positive endorsement of the calibre of players coming through the ranks at Cork City FC. Clodagh, Kiera, Niamh, Ellie, Heidi O’Sullivan and Heidi Macken have shown tremendous skill on the pitch and I am thrilled that their talents have been spotted by the international coaches and I am confident that we will see more from them in the future. Clodagh and Kiera will not be playing against Shamrock Rovers this Saturday as they are in Portugal for a tournament but we have some really strong players who have been training extra hard for the games against Peamount United and Shamrock Rovers, who are in first and second place in the league. ,It hasn’t been the easiest season for Cork City FC but playing against the league leaders is a great experience for our players and I hope the fans come out in support of the girls at Turner’s Cross this Saturday.”

Niamh Cotter and Ellie O’Brien are among the players available for this weekend’s clash along with this season’s top goal scorer Fiana Bradley.

The Shamrock Rovers game will be City’s first home fixture since the World Cup and this is also the opening weekend of the new Cork Women’s and Schoolgirls Soccer League season.  To mark the occasion, Cork City FC are inviting schoolgirl teams to come to Turner’s Cross for the game to celebrate the return of women’s football on Leeside.

All Under 16s can attend free of charge, and tickets are available here: https://corkcityfc.ticketco.events/ie/ie/e/wpd_cork_city_v_shamrock_rovers
