Republic of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman has welcomed the collapse of the European Super League.

The Everton skipper says the backlash against the proposed breakaway competition has shown the power of supporters to club owners.

Fan protests put pressure on the six English founder clubs to withdraw from the tournament, with that domino effect leading to the project dying yesterday.

Coleman was pleased that Everton took a strong stance against the Super League.

"Our club made an unbelievable statement that I was so proud to be a part of, and so proud to play to play for this football club when I read that statement.

"I really thought it summed up exactly what people were thinking and what people were feeling."
