A design team was due to be appointed for the hospital on the site of the current St Stephen’s Hospital in Glanmire next month, however it could be June before the team is appointed.

Calls for an elective hospital have been growing in recent years due to the level of overcrowding at Cork’s acute hospitals.

TD Colm Burke outlines when the hospital is expected to become operational:

"The very earliest is mid-2027 and I think its far too late- we need to fast-track this. We've identified a site, we need to appoint a design team, we need to put down timelines as regards when that design should be finished by and we need to get on with the planning."
