Some roads across Cork county will not reopen for another year at least following the damage caused by Storm Babet six weeks ago.

The County Council is facing a €40 million road repair bill due to the damage caused by Storm Babet.

The most intense rainfall during the storm was in the East Cork region after 100mm of rain fell in a 24 hour period.

Council Engineer Niall Healy told RedFM News that the rural road network was the worst hit:

"I'm very conscious this works on bridge infrastructure will take several years. So unfortunately there are some roads where they're currently impassable due to damaged bridges. There's detours in place. Some of those detours unfortunately will remain in place for quite some time. You could be talking about a year to two years".
