Changes at SouthDoc in Cork have come into place in an effort to future-proof the service.

It's hoped an enlarged rota of GPs will make the out-of-hours GP service sustainable.

SouthDoc in Macroom will remain appointment-only, and other “service enhancements” at Clonakilty and Listowel also start today.

Clonakilty will open as usual during the week, and from 9am to 6pm at weekends.

Locum cover will be provided from Bandon.

SouthDoc says the changes are due to the "continuing shortage of GPs and the resulting growing risk of burnout of GPs, who continue to provide a day-time service in these areas."
