Alcohol consumption here fell by 4.5% last year - a drop of more than a third since 2001.

New figures from the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland show people are drinking less and the data shows Irish people are drinking in moderation.

The report reveals alcohol consumption here has dropped to average European levels.

Associate Professor Emeritus at DCU, Anthony Foley, who compiled the report, says they looked at data from 17 other EU countries.

"We still probably have the image of the 'drinking Irish', but in the report published today we look at 17 other UK and EU countries.

"Last year in a 2024 report the Health Research Board found that Ireland was ranked only 16th highest of 38 OECD countries."
