The Tanaiste doesn't believe the Katherine Zappone controversy is distracting from the work of Government.

Leo Varadkar says himself and the Foreign Affairs Minister have accepted they didn't handle her appointment to a now defunct UN role properly.

The Tanaiste has apologised for not publishing text messages of the appointment sooner while Simon Coveney says he deleted his texts over hacking concerns.

Leo Varadkar had this to say, when asked if they should consider their positions.

"No I don't think it is causing a distraction for Government.

"Bear in mind, I'm here in Northern Ireland doing my work as Minister for Trade and Employement, Simon Coveney is in Slovenia doing his work as Minister for Foreign Affairs, and this afternoon the Government will publish its housing for all plan on housing, outlining how we're going to deal with the housing crisis.

"I don't think we're being overshadowed, but it's certainly a shadow."

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's RedFM Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald outlined what she believes needs to happen now.

"Simon Coveney needs to go back in front of the committee, and he needs to give now an accurate account of what happened, including the genesis of this particular envoy position.

"I think we need frank honest in respect of the interactions between him, between Leo Varadkar, between Katherine Zappone, any situation where people are representing the state I think there has to be tranparancey and oversight and people shouldn't be pulling a fast one at the end of a cabinet meeting blindsiding the head of government and furiously covering your tracks afterwards.

"That's not how things operate here."
