The Studentss Union at UCC say a pub owner they spoke to has acknowledged that more could be done to search people before letting them into venues in the city.

The union are holding a 'Take Back The Spike' demonstration at the college this evening at 6pm to highlight the recent increase in reports of syringe spikings in Ireland.

In an open letter addressed to the owners and managers of nightclubs and pubs, the SU are asking for more security staff in venues and more thorough searches to ensure people are not carrying items like syringes.

It's after a number of women including a UCC student in Limerick reported being spiked with a needle in the past few weeks.

Speaking to RedFM News, Caoimhe Walshe from UCC Students' Union says venues have been receptive to the idea of getting their staff trained to intervene in situations where someone may be in trouble.

"I've had two or three get back to me, one of the nightclubs in town is looking at getting all their staff trained in the bystander programme.

"I was chatting to one man who owns a pub and I was saying that with Covid certs and IDs that you're busy, and it's just kinda being slipped past and people are getting in with God knows what.

"He was saying that I was dead right, that people aren't being searched as thoroughly any more, because you have to check a Covid cert, you have to check ID, you have to contact trace."
