The Irish Farmers Association says there's a short window of opportunity to prevent food shortages.

The IFA says it's disappointed with the lack of urgency for putting plans in place for all farmers to grow crops this season.

The farming group met with the Minister for Agriculture and officials from his department last night.

Minister Charlie McConalogue has asked all farmers to grow crops, over fears the war in Ukraine will lead to a shortage in grains.

But IFA President, Tim Cullinan, says an urgent plan is needed.

"First of all farmers have to reschedule and re-plan what they're doing.

"we have a window of a number of weeks here now. That's why it's so important that we get a decision from the Minister, how we're going to go about doing this.

"We need action immediately so farmers can plan their business."
