The Department of Education is reportedly objecting to more large-scale housing developments on the grounds of a lack of school places.

There was criticism yesterday of Department objections to a fast-track strategic housing development for just over 1000 apartments in Baldoyle in north Dublin because a site couldn't be identified to house a new school.

However the Irish Independent says similar objections have been made to at least 10 other SHD's across the country in recent years, each time on the grounds that it wouldn't be possible to provide enough school places.

Two active planning applications which have been objected to by the Department would provide over 1,000 homes in Cork.
