Publicans want excise duty cut in the Budget to help them 'survive the winter'.

It's after a report showed there are now over 1,800 fewer pubs across the country since 2005.

That's a decline of 21% over 16 years.

Every county in Ireland saw a fall in the number of pubs.

Cork publican Michael O'Donovan from the Vintners Federation of Ireland says there should be action taken in the Budget to help pub owners:

"We're heading into the perfect storm this winter with rising costs. We're experiencing staffing difficulties. Our trade is being affected at the moment with people being exposed careful of how they're spending their disposable income. We're asking the government really to reduce the excise duty so we can survive the winter."
