A Professor of Health Systems says it's very likely Ireland will have some cases of Monkeypox, but the health service is ready to take action.
The World Health Organisation's confirmed 80 cases of the virus across the world, with an extra 50 being investigated in Europe.
The infection is mainly mild, and up to now the majority of cases were in west and central Africa.
DCU Professor Anthony Staines believes Monkeypox won't cause much threat:
"It's very unlikely to cause any major problems here. The health service is ready for it. There is a working group inside hpsc Who are focusing on exactly this. And it does not appear to transmit easily from person to person. It is a new virus and one thing COVID has taught us is never say never about viruses but I would say this is a virus of relatively low concern."
