A man in his 60s has died while swimming at a lake in County Laois.
He got into difficulty at Derryounce Lake in Portarlington at around half 3 yesterday afternoon.
He was taken from the water and brought to Portlaoise General Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.
Gardaí are treating his death as a tragic accident and a file will be prepared for the Coroner.
With many people flocking to the water during the hot spell, RNLI spokesperson Eleanor Hooker has this advice:
"If you're going out on the water today, wherever you are, at the coast or inland, check the weather. And if you're going to sea, check the tides. Avoid going out in offshore winds. On Lough Derg, for instance, the wind is normally south-westerly; so if you're on the eastern shore by Dromineer or Garrykennedy , the wind isn't always coming toward you; but on days where is is going offshore, it looks calm, but when you're out there it can get pretty wild. So be careful of that at sea too because it can blow you out to sea".
