Officials at Leinster House are considering introducing a second Dáil chamber.

The Ceann Comhairle is consulting with political party leaders on the proposal, which it's hoped would make politics more family friendly.

It would see Oireachtas business held in both chambers at the same time, so proceedings could finish at 7 or 8pm, rather than midnight or later.

But Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer says there are other options that could be examined:

"I think we'd all like a family friendly parliament. There was a report that there was a committee established by the county coroner to look at. Certainly there's a need to look at how we do business both in the upper house and lower house. In terms of the equalization of time, I'm not sure that a second chamber is the answer. I think we should look at things also like to new week as committees have made the committee week so that we can do things differently."
