Single-sex schools should cease to exist within the next 15 years, according to the Labour Party.

It's urging the government to discontinue what it calls "outdated" gender discrimination in school admissions.

It says eliminating single-sex schools would tackle consent and toxic masculinity, and bring Ireland in line with many other countries.

Labour's education spokesperson, Aodhán O'Riordáin, says having students divided by gender must be addressed.

"I think we're trying to move to a modern education system which is reflective of every other European country.

"Having so many children separated on the basis of gender at primary and secondary school doesn't lead to the type of society that we're trying to encourage."
