There are calls to end of practice of using schools as polling stations

The National Parents Council says this sends the wrong message to students and parents by prioritising elections over education.

It would like to see other buildings like community centres and halls used so education can be maintained.

CEO of the NPC, Áine Lynch, says this is about sending a clear message

"Obviously we do want children to have time off and enjoy it with families, but that should be centred around school holidays and bank holidays. What we really need to make sure is that the importance of school and education is recognised by the State. And when the schools is closed for elections that can be mixed messages for families and children"
