Members of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions will meet this morning to discuss what further measures are needed to get the Government back into public sector pay talks.

The union has threatened industrial action this autumn unless the talks, which ended without agreement in June, are restarted and an improved offer is made by the State.

Back then, the Government made an offer of a 2.5% increase on the Building Momentum Public Service Agreement which unions felt wasn't adequate to meet the cost of living crisis for workers.

INMO General Secretary Phil Ni Sheaghdha has backed the unions' stance and says there will be consequences if a resolution isn't found:

"We do not believe that the awards that were set out in building momentum for cost of living increases now match the actual costs of going to work for nurses and midwives. And therefore, our focus is to get an improved offer that we can put to our members. If that improved offer doesn't come, well, then there will be consequences to that and we will be part of that public service wide campaign."
