Educate Together, which represents 96 primary and 21 second-level equality-based schools around the Country, is calling for a Citizens' Asembly to address patronage in the education system.

It says there is broad support for increased choice in education but there is no consensus on how to proceed.

90 per cent of all primary schools still have Catholic patronage, despite the declining number of stated Catholics in the country.

Educate Together CEO, Emer Nowlan, called on the Government to ramp up the provision of educate together schools around the Country.

She told her AGM that Educate Together schools are thriving, wherever they have been allowed to open and added it's simply not fair that access depends on where one lives.

Emer Nowland said It's time for a clear strategy so that families seeking this option can make their preference known and this ever-growing demand can be met.

She added that the State has a target of 400 multi-denominational primary schools by 2030, but there is no clear strategy or interim targets towards achieving this.

Educate Together is calling for a Citizens’ Assembly on Education for new schools to open in line with parental demand.
