Electric Ireland and Bord Gáis should forego any profits from price hikes to keep costs down for consumers, according to an Irish MEP.

Billy Kelleher and other MEPs will today be debating what the EU can do to help people deal with the increasing cost of living and rocketing energy prices.

They'll also examine the most effective way of imposing a windfall tax on the profits of energy companies.

Billy Kelleher says both Electric Ireland and Bord Gáis should not be profiting during a crisis:

"Families are under significant pressure, Electric Ireland Bord Gáis have continually announced price increases. The question is whether or not in those price increases that there is a profit margin already included. If there is that should be forgone, and there should be no profit taking at this very, very difficult juncture for people. Everybody's in this together and that means semi state companies government and citizens alike."
