The average rent in Cork is now up 111% from its lowest point.
That's according to a Cork TD who was speaking in the Dáil during a motion on affordable rents.
The proposed People Before Profit Bill would cap rents at a quarter of median monthly household income, however the government has said a proposed bill to cap rents would be unconstitutional.
In Cork City, rents have risen by 10.2% in the last year and the average rent is now €1,607 per month.
Speaking to RedFM News, Sinn Féin TD for Cork South Central, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, has criticised the Government's lack of action in providing affordable rents to ordinary workers and families:
in Cork City rents have risen by 10.2% in the last year, and the average rent is now €1607, per month. How are ordinary workers and families supposed to survive and manage with rents like that, it's absolutely shocking that the average rent for a one bed apartment, a one bed in Cork city currently stands at €1112 per month. Is it any wonder that young people are considering whether they will stay here? how they can make life here?"
